Type of circuit: Aventure
Difficulty: medium
Advantage: Makay – Tsingy du Bemara – Antsirabe

DAY 1
ANTANANARIVO –  MIANDRIVAZO

We will set off early for Miandrivazo, traveling through the town of Ambatolampy, renowned for its skilled metalwork, particularly aluminum, and pass through Antsirabe, the industrial capital known for its textile and food industries, as well as historical monuments. Antsirabe also benefits from its cool climate at an altitude of around 1,200 meters, making it a key producer of vegetables. After lunch there, we continue along the partially paved RN 34 to Miandrivazo, where we will check into our hotel, have dinner, and spend the night.

DAY 2
MIANDRIVAZO – ANTSAKOAZATO

After breakfast, we leave Miandrivazo and drive 115 km to Malaimbandy, where our trackers will be waiting. After making the last preparations for the Makay trek, we can take a one-hour stroll around the small town. We then continue for 45 km on a sometimes sandy track (around 3.5 hours), passing through savannah and forest. We stop for a picnic lunch before heading a few more kilometers to the village of Antsakoazato, where the car drops us off. We meet our porters and continue on foot (a 2-hour walk to our first campsite), crossing plateaus and streams.

DAY 3
ANTSAKOAZATO – ANKARAMENA

After breakfast, we cross a river and then put our shoes back on to pass by a few countryside shelters used by locals during the farming season. We change shoes again to walk through the river and reach a dry sandbank before ascending a plateau covered with stones. The landscape is diverse, with forests, savannas, and rivers. We arrive at our second campsite before noon, allowing you to enjoy the afternoon in nature, relax by the river, or take a nap. We will spend the night in tents by the forest and river.

DAY 4
ANKARAMENA – SAKAPALY

We leave the campsite and cross to the other side of the river, passing through a small primary forest adorned with palm trees (pandanus) with sharp, serrated leaves that provide shelter to small lizards, insects, and frogs. The path is diverse, with rivers, primary forest, and sand. We reach a natural pool, flanked by two red cliffs, where we set up camp. In the afternoon, you can enjoy the pool. Overnight camping.

DAY 5 SAKAPALY

After breakfast, we backtrack 100 meters and then take another path, starting with the river and moving through dry sand and forest. We reach the entrance of the canyon and the junction of three rivers. Our camp is set up on white sand along the riverbank, shaded by trees from the primary forest. The afternoon is dedicated to relaxing and swimming. We’ll spend the evening under the stars.

DAY 6 SAKAPALY

In the morning, we set off to explore the canyon, marveling at its changing colors as we wade upstream in the river with our feet in the water. We follow the most beautiful section of the Makay, where we can feel the pebbles beneath our feet. We enjoy lunch in the canyon. In the afternoon, we return to the campsite to rest. There is an opportunity to admire the sunset by climbing a cliff, which is accessible by an easy walk (80 meters high with alternating slopes). Dinner and overnight stay at the campsite.

DAY 7
SAKAPALY – BEROA

We head back, following the riverbank. We cross the river again and continue through the forest. With some luck, we might spot lemurs, who are shy of visitors, as well as birds and free-roaming zebu cattle. We reach our campsite, set up, and have lunch. We then proceed east to return to the first campsite, crossing savannahs, plateaus, and rivers. We bid farewell to the magnificent sandstone massif of the Makay.

DAY 8
BEROA – MALAIMBANDY – MORONDAVA

We set off early for a two-hour walk on a plateau to reach the vehicle. We say goodbye to our team of porters. The rest of the journey is by car to Malaimbandy (3.5 hours on rough tracks, 45km), and then we continue on the RN34 to Morondava, which is 115km away, about a 2.5-hour drive. We arrive around noon at the hotel, check-in, and spend the rest of the day relaxing. Dinner and overnight at Hotel TRECICOGNE.

DAY 9
MORONDAVA – BEKOPAKA

Early departure to Bekopaka. We cross the Tsiribihina River by motorized ferry, taking about an hour, and enjoy views of the river and surrounding rice fields. After lunch, we drive 100km to Bekopaka, crossing the Manambolo River by ferry before arriving at the hotel. Dinner and overnight at Hotel ORCHIDEE DU BEMARAHA.

DAY 10 – 11
BEKOPAKA – TSINGY – BEKOPAKA

After breakfast, we depart at 7 am to visit the Madagascar National Park office for tickets and to meet our guide. We drive 17km on a rough track to the Tsingy Park entrance. We spend the day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its dramatic limestone formations and lemur populations. We navigate through mazes, caves, and viewpoints before returning to the hotel in the afternoon. Overnight at Hotel ORCHIDEE DU BEMARAHA. And return to Morondava with a lunch stop in Belo. Arrive back at Hotel TRECICOGNE.

DAY 12 MORONDAVA

After breakfast, we will take a traditional outrigger canoe with a sail to visit a fishing village. We will visit a boat-building workshop and then enjoy a picnic lunch prepared by locals. In the afternoon, we head to the Avenue of the Baobabs to admire these giant trees at sunset. We will have dinner at a lively spot with rich cultural songs. Overnight at Hotel TRECICOGNE.

DAY 13
MORONDAVA – ANTSIRABE

Departure for Antsirabe with a lunch break in Miandrivazo (approximately 10 hours of driving). Dinner and overnight at Hotel TSARA GUEST HOUSE.

DAY 14 ANTSIRABE

The morning is dedicated to exploring Antsirabe. Then, about 20km away, we will visit Lake Tritriva and take a short hike to enjoy the volcanic landscape. This is a dormant volcano crater dating back several centuries. On the way back, we visit some landmarks and art shops (transforming zebu horns into various utensils and essential oil boutiques). Lunch and afternoon free. In the evening, we can dine at some famous local spots. Overnight at Hotel TSARA GUEST HOUSE.

DAY 15
ANTSIRABE – ANTANANARIVO

We leave Antsirabe for Antananarivo (270km via Ambatolampy). We visit an aluminum foundry and then continue to Behenjy for lunch, known for its foie gras. We conclude our trip in Antananarivo by late afternoon.
